Hello friends,
How “are” you all? Hope you’re ready to continue to fight. My brain is pudding. I’ve said this so many times today it’s starting to feel like it’s not a real sentence, and because of that feeling, I’m so sorry, but this newsletter is gonna be a short one.
WRAP UP OF 11/1 DISCUSSION: Trick or Treaty?
This week, we discussed dishonesty and coercion related to the treaties that the US and Canada have signed with the indigenous people of Turtle Island. We talked about white people’s need to be able to relate to everything to take it seriously and how that’s just bullshit.
We talked about this quote from Malcom X:
and about how the knife is still in the backs of the BIPOC in this country. We talked briefly about Mark Charles’ TEDTalk ‘We The People’. Give it a watch if you haven’t already.
Shared links from the chat and other resources will one day be found on the ARFF resources page and you all know the end of this sentence.
ACTIONS FOR THIS WEEK
The collective action for this week, if you chose to participate, is to take care of the people around you. Specifically, find a way to support Black and Indigenous people in your life this week. Take care of yourself. The election is such a small part of the fight, but it’s also exhausting.
If you have an action that you think others might like to magnify, please share by commenting or by sending a message to the ARFF email. I’ll include it in next week’s newsletter.
THE WATCH AND LINKS FOR THE CHAT ON SUNDAY, 11/8
This week, let’s watch Blood Quantum and meet on Sunday 11/8 at 6pm Eastern. Blood Quantum was directed by Jeff Barnaby (Mi’kmaq) and is available for free on Amazon Prime with a seven-day free trial of Shudder, or for rent on Youtube and Vudu.
Blood Quantum is a zombie movie, and so it has everything you’d expect in such a film: doomed love, chainsaws, some gore, an economy and society that has broken down completely. It isn’t really very scary, and I hope you enjoy the momentary escape from reality.
You can listen to the Code Switch episode on what blood quantum is here.
In this article, Alicia Elliot talks about writing horror in a world where that’s really all you know.
As always, looking forward to seeing you all on Sunday. The more the merrier, so maybe convince a friend to join us?
xx, Abby
Here is the link to our Zoom Room Chat on Sunday 11/8 at 6pm. All are welcome, even if you haven’t watched the film or if you’d like to just come and listen.
As always, if you know of anyone who might be interested in joining in, feel free to share this letter with them.
If someone sent you this email and you’d like subscribe, you can do so here.
